This interesting story was covered by the San Francisco Chronicle, and on March 12, 1922, the New York Times reported that smooth, warm rocks had been falling out of a cloudless sky over Chico, California since July 1921.
The first complaint was made on November 1921 to City Marshall, J.A. Peck, by J.W. Charge, who said someone was throwing stones at his warehouse every day. The stones fell with enough force to damage windows, wooden boards, and roof shingles. Investigators, Fire Chief C.E. Tovee and Traffic Officer J.J. Corbett, narrowly escaped personal injury when a large boulder struck a wall where they had been standing only moments earlier.
Police could not come up with an explanation for the long duration of the phenomenon or the limited geographic scope of the rock fall (only on or around the warehouse).
Well, these giants might be a bit of an exaggeration.
In addition to rocks falling from Chico’s skies, on Sept 2, 1878, the New York Times said the Chico Record had reported that a great number of small fishes fell from a cloudless sky, covering a store and several acres.
Falling fish or frogs or reptiles seem easier to explain than rocks, as they can be picked up by waterspouts from pools of water. The curious thing here is how the waterspouts manage to only pick up one species at a time out of the body of water. A Moses-type plague? Heavenly provision for the hungry? Hmmm.
Speaking of hungry (ugh), there have been several documented accounts of flesh and blood falling from the sky. These have been examined, but with no reasonable explanation. Well, reasonable to most of us. Some assert that Aliens are dumping their refuse to lighten their load before exiting our atmosphere. Hmmm, again.
Be sure to watch the One Step Beyond video where this story is featured along with another fun mystery.
It was One Step Beyond that brought me here! It was a terrific show. As a child, I watched every episode! I found the stories to be exciting, They left me curious and, to this day. I still love these mysteries. They got me interested in science! I always wanted to know why and how things happened. Still do, today, which is a major reason that I love the internet!
One Step Beyond on You Tube brought me here too.
I WATCH THE ONE STEP BEYOND. STORY ABOUT CHICO, CA. ROCKS. FALLING FROM THE SKY, VERY INTERESTING STORY.
I’ve enjoyed these, the twilight zone and the outer limits. I wanted to be a scientist but grew up in a dysfunctional environment made it impossible but I harold the coming of someone like Mr. Elon Musk, Dr. Neil DeGeneres Tyson, scientist engineer Mr. Bill Nye and others. Let’s make America and the world a better place for all. Please!
Ditto, one step beyond.
& TYVM for your article!
Do still some articles or so exist which proof it?
It seems we all ‘know’ it just from that tv show.
Anyhow; could it have been a kind of Poltergeist phenomenon? It is thought that these objects are moved by the mind of a somehow disturbed (or how shall I call this; insecure maybe? ) person.
Since it always happened at that warehouse, I could indeed think it had something to do with somebody inside it.
You may or may not have heard about the Rosenheim phenomenom, when in the 1960s in the small Bavaria town Rosenheim very strange things happened inside the bureau of an Lawyer. It is the best documented and best investigated case of a Poltergeist ever. After the young secretary left, everything stopped. She was unhappy in that job and that was said the reason. Even incredible heavy meTal Tresor where taken and put into the middle of the room, without disturbing the carpet on the floor. Pictires swung around their nails. The telephones dialed the same number hundreds of times without anybody in the room, and so on. The girl went to Munich, if I remember right, and nothing strange was ever heard of her again.
It has nothing to do with it, but for me zhe case in Cino is as interesting and not easy to explain as the Van Meter Visitor. A story which is as interested as this one you showed us!
I can tell you that on Aug 29, 1878 marked the day that fish of all origins fell on Chico and in March of 1885 there was a huge metal craft which also came down. This story surrounds what happened between July 1921 through November 1921 and last documented on March 17th 1922 when the stranger left Chico. Just ask Ed and Nikola they very familiar.
The name of that One Step Beyond episode is called Where Are They?
I wondered whether any of the fallen rocks were saved – if any perhaps ended up in a local museum. These days the nature and geographical origin of of all kinds of matter can be confidently determined – it would be interesting to establish exactly where these rocks originated.
I used to watch one step beyond when I was 7 years old, I loved that series, and most of the tv series in those years I watched.
